Monzo Business Account Review UK: Lite, Pro & Team
Monzo Business is one of the easiest UK business accounts to like if you run the company from your phone. Lite costs nothing, Pro adds the tools many sole traders actually want, and Team turns it into a more serious multi-user account. The question is whether paying £9 or £25 a month saves enough admin to justify the upgrade.
Is Monzo Business a good account?
Yes, particularly for sole traders, consultants, freelancers and small limited companies that bank almost entirely online.
Monzo gets the basics right: a full UK business current account, free UK bank transfers, instant notifications, Pots, 24/7 support, mobile banking and a simple web view.
The paid plans then add the features that remove actual admin: invoicing, Tax Pots, accounting integrations, virtual cards, connected accounts and team controls.
Why Monzo has become hard to ignore
In the independent business-current-account service quality results published in August 2026, 85% of Monzo business customers surveyed said they would recommend it to another SME. That put Monzo first, ahead of Starling at 83%, Mettle at 82% and Tide at 69%.
That does not make it the perfect account for every business. Cash-heavy firms, partnerships and companies with complex international needs should compare the alternatives carefully.
Monzo Business Lite vs Pro vs Team
Lite
Best for: sole traders and very small businesses that mainly need straightforward banking.
- Full UK business current account
- Free UK bank transfers
- 24/7 support
- Instant Access Savings Pots
- Making Tax Digital filing tools
- International payments
Pro
Best for: owner-managed businesses where invoicing and bookkeeping are becoming a weekly chore.
- Everything in Lite
- Create and manage invoices
- Tax Pots
- Xero, FreeAgent, Sage and QuickBooks integrations
- Virtual cards
- Connected accounts and custom categories
Team
Best for: limited companies with employees who need access, cards or approval controls.
- Everything in Pro
- Expense cards
- Bulk payments
- Payment approvals
- More advanced team access levels
- Up to 15 team members for limited companies
Is Monzo Pro worth £9 a month?
For many sole traders, Pro is probably the sweet spot.
Lite is excellent if all you want is a dedicated business account. But Pro starts to earn its £9 monthly fee if you are separately paying for invoicing software, manually moving tax money every time a customer pays, or spending Sunday evening reconciling receipts.
At £9 a month, Pro costs £108 a year.
If the invoicing, Tax Pots and accounting connection save even one hour of admin each month, plenty of owner-managed businesses will consider that money well spent.
The £108-a-year test
Ask what you would pay someone else to do the admin Pro removes. If £108 a year saves twelve hours of bookkeeping, the question stops being “is £9 expensive?” and becomes “is my time worth more than £9 an hour?”
When does Monzo Team make sense?
Team costs £25 a month, or £300 a year.
That is harder to justify for a one-person consultancy. It makes much more sense once other people genuinely need access to company money.
Team adds expense cards, bulk payments, payment approvals and stronger user permissions. Limited companies can currently have up to 15 team members, with the first six included and additional members charged at £5 each per month.
Sole traders can add up to two other team members, which is useful if a bookkeeper, assistant or employee needs controlled access without being handed the owner’s login.
This is the important bit: never share the owner’s banking login just because it feels easier. Proper access controls exist for a reason.
Monzo is unusually strong for small-business admin
Tax Pots
Pro and Team can automatically move a percentage of incoming money into a Tax Pot. You can create up to three Tax Pots and even use the money in them for Direct Debits and standing orders when the bill arrives.
For a sole trader, automatically moving 20% or 25% of every customer payment into a separate pot is much more useful than discovering in January that the “tax money” was accidentally spent on a new laptop in August.
Making Tax Digital
Monzo now includes its Making Tax Digital filing tool across all Business plans. That is increasingly relevant as Making Tax Digital for Income Tax expands to more sole traders.
Accounting integrations
Pro and Team connect directly with Xero, FreeAgent, Sage and QuickBooks.
Monzo currently also offers new Xero customers six months free on Pro and eight months free on Team, with the offer advertised until 31 May 2027 subject to its terms.
If you are still choosing software, compare our accounting software guide.
Invoices, payment links, cash and cheques
Monzo is no longer an account that assumes every customer pays by bank transfer.
Invoices
Pro and Team can create quotes and invoices from the app or web interface, track what is due and add payment links.
Cash deposits
Monzo currently charges £1 per cash deposit.
- Sole traders can deposit up to £3,000 per month.
- Limited companies can deposit up to £10,000 per month.
- Post Office deposits can be larger than PayPoint deposits.
That makes Monzo much more usable for occasional cash than it once was, although a cash-heavy shop or hospitality business should still compare the cost with traditional banks.
Cheques
Cheques under £500 can currently be deposited in-app, while larger cheques can be sent by post.
Monzo Instant Access Savings Pots
Monzo Business includes instant-access savings, allowing spare business cash to stay inside the same app while earning interest.
Monzo currently advertises rates of up to 3.25% AER variable, with interest paid monthly and no minimum deposit. The rate available can depend on the current product and terms, so check the live rate in the app before moving a large balance.
The main attraction is convenience. You can separate an emergency reserve, equipment fund or future tax liability without opening another banking app.
If you have a meaningful cash reserve, convenience should not be the only consideration. Compare the live rate with our best business savings accounts.
Is Monzo good for overseas business?
Monzo Business can send international payments in more than 30 currencies, and the app shows the exchange rate and fees before you confirm the transfer.
Businesses can also receive overseas payments using an IBAN.
If Monzo receives a payment in a supported foreign currency and converts it into pounds, it currently charges a 1% conversion fee, capped at £1,000 per transaction.
That is perfectly workable for occasional overseas customers.
For a company receiving or holding multiple currencies every week, Revolut Business or Wise is still a more natural comparison because multi-currency banking is central to those products.
Loans and overdrafts are available, but eligibility matters
Monzo has expanded beyond simple current accounts and now offers business lending to eligible customers.
Eligible sole traders can currently be offered an arranged overdraft of up to £3,000, with a representative EAR of 39.0% variable.
Business loans are also available to eligible customers, including some limited companies, with pricing dependent on the amount and applicant.
Borrowing should never be the reason to open a bank account unless you have confirmed what is actually available to your business. “Loans available” and “we will lend your company £20,000 next Tuesday” are very different statements.
Who can open a Monzo Business account?
Monzo currently accepts:
- UK sole traders; and
- directors of eligible UK limited companies by shares.
Businesses must meet Monzo’s eligibility and industry criteria, and approval is not guaranteed.
Partnerships are the obvious gap
Monzo Business is not currently set up for ordinary business partnerships. If your business has that structure, compare other providers rather than assuming Monzo will fit because it accepts limited companies.
If you are opening your first account, see our guide to opening a business bank account.
Is Monzo Business FSCS protected?
Monzo is a regulated UK bank.
Eligible sole traders and small businesses can receive Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection of up to £120,000, subject to FSCS eligibility rules.
For most small firms this is more than enough to cover normal operating cash. If the company regularly holds more than the protection limit, consider how deposits are spread across authorised banking institutions.
Which businesses are the best fit?
Sole traders and freelancers
Lite keeps costs at zero while Pro adds exactly the kind of invoicing, tax and bookkeeping features self-employed people commonly need.
Consultancies and service businesses
Low cash usage, digital invoicing and straightforward supplier payments fit Monzo particularly well.
Small limited companies
Team becomes useful once employees need cards, access or payment approvals.
Owners who want everything visible immediately
Instant notifications, Pots and Insights make it easy to see where the business stands without digging through reports.
Who may be better off with another provider?
- Cash-heavy businesses: £1 per cash deposit can still add up.
- Partnerships: Monzo Business does not currently support ordinary partnerships.
- Businesses heavily dependent on foreign currencies: Revolut Business or Wise can be stronger.
- Businesses wanting branch banking: Monzo is branchless.
- Companies wanting a dedicated relationship manager: a traditional business bank may be a better fit.

Monzo is one of the strongest business accounts for app-first SMEs
Monzo Lite is difficult to fault for a small business that wants straightforward digital banking without a monthly fee.
Pro is the more interesting account for many owner-managed businesses. At £9 a month, invoicing, Tax Pots and accounting integrations can easily justify the cost if they replace manual admin.
Team makes sense when the business is genuinely becoming a team rather than one owner with a couple of occasional helpers.
The main reasons to choose something else are structural: lots of cash, a partnership, heavy multi-currency activity or a real need for branch banking.
The latest independent service-quality result strengthens the case. An 85% recommendation score and first place among major business-current-account providers suggests Monzo’s appeal is not just good marketing. A lot of actual SME customers like using it.
